"The Jews split into seventy-one sects, and the Christians split into seventy-two sects, and this nation will split into seventy-three sects; all of them will be in the Fire except one."
It was said: "Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?"
He said: "Those who are upon what I and my Companions are upon."
In some narrations it states: "They are the Jamāʿah (the main body)."
It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, and al-Ḥākim, who said: "It is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim."
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The Jews split into seventy-one sects," meaning that all of them are doomed except one; "the Christians split into seventy-two sects," meaning that all of them are doomed except one; and "this nation will split into seventy-three sects, all of them will be in the Fire except one."
As for the one saved group:
"They are Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah: the Companions and those who follow them with excellence, the people of tawḥīd and faith."
